Kotha Janta Movie Review

Maruthi who has delivered three hits in a row has become a brand among the business circles. Allu Sirish who failed to impress with debut film tried his hand at romantic comedy and played safe by having Maruthi on board. Let's see if Maruthi delivered the punch that Sirish was hoping for.

What is it about?

Sirish (Allu Sirish) is a selfish guy who doesn't care about others. Suvarna (Regina) is also similar type of character. Both of them work together for a TV channel and hosts a show called Kotha Janta where they conduct live marriages for controversial couples. They get an offer to join another TV channel, but Suvarna rejects the offer. Sirish fakes love to make her accept the offer. Suvarna takes him seriously, but Sirish remains to be selfish that causes tension in their relation.

Performances:

Allu Sirish:

Allu Sirish was stiff in Gouravam. Here he got the role of a typical youth and that made it easy for him. However he is still struggling to give right expressions. His body language lacks confidence. He doesn't have any special skills in dances or fights. Sirish will have to work hard to make an impression as an actor.

Regina:

Regina is very good. She is one of the positive aspects of this film. She is equally good in bubbly as well as pathos scenes.

Others:

Saptagiri stole the show whenever he is on screen. His lengthy comedy scene in the first half brought the house down. Posani Krishna Murali will entertain masses. Other guys who played the friend characters of Sirish are okay. Rohini and Rao Ramesh made their presence felt. Madhurima sizzled in an item song.

Technicalities:

Direction:

Maruthi did his best to keep the film clean. His efforts to come out of that 'Boothu director' image are evident. One would expect more fun and comedy in Maruthi's film. Kotha Janta doesn't offer hilarious comedy except for few laughs here and there. This is a routine romantic entertainer with 'Selfishness' as the theme. Maruthi did a neat job on the whole.

Music:

Music is decent. Popular item song 'Atu Amalapuram' is used to good effect. Rest of the songs are okay. Nothing to rave or whine about background score.

Others:

Editing is alright. Cinematography is up to the mark. Dialogues are okay. Production values are good.

Thumbs Up:

Saptagiri's comedy

Thumbs Down:

Predictable Screenplay

Analysis:

Kotha Janta is a formulaic romantic entertainer that checks all the boxes of the genre. We have seen many romantic comedies that are based on the egos of the lead characters. In this film Maruthi focused on the selfishness in humans. What happens if a girl falls in love with selfish guy? This is the basic idea of Kotha Janta.

There is some freshness in it. We expect the film to offer fresh entertainment and romance. But Maruthi played it safe by taking the beaten track. This makes the romance in the film uninteresting and the director had to fall back on comedy to make it watchable. There are some good scenes in the first half during the first half hour. Later the film takes the routine path and turns predictable.

Second half is not as impressive as the first half. There is hardly any chemistry between Sirish and Regina. Kotha Janta is just a time pass flick with routine romance and few laughs. Maruthi sticking to the formula might help the film on the commercial front. Those who expect a brand new love story will be left disappointed. Sirish may breathe easy as this film will not be ruled out completely like his debut film. But he will have to put in lot of efforts if he wants to achieve at least half of what his brother achieved till now.

Verdict: Nothing NEW!

Anamika Movie Review and Rating

Anamika Movie Rating

Rating:2.5/5

Cast: Nayantara , Harshvardhan Rane , Vaibhav

Anamika Movie Review

Anamika: Logic 'Missing'

Ever since director Sekhar Kammula announced that he would be remaking Kahaani down the South (in Telugu and Tamil), there has been much curiosity around the project. With Nayantara being roped in to reprise Vidya Balan's role, the expectations have got bigger. Despite many delays in the shooting and none other than Nayan shunning promotions, Sekhar Kammula managed to keep the hype alive. Let's check out our take on it.

Synopsis:

Anamika (Nayantara) arrives to Hyderabad in search of her loving-husband Ajay Sastri, a techie, who has been missing for a week after he came down to Hyderabad from U.S on work. Nayan files a missing complaint in local police station and desperately tries to find his location. The emphasis is on: Who is Ajay Sastri? Does he exist outside Anaamika's head? Is he alive? Did he ditch Anaamika? Or Who abducted him? Why did they do so?

Performances:

Nayantara as Anaamika done a fair job in the film. She easily slipped into  the character and carries the film on her shoulders. It's Nayan's show all the way. She sheds her tears, emotes well and keep you hooked to the film. Despite less screen presence, Harshvardhan scores with his brief role as terrorist. The whole film is all about him (Ajay Sastri) who only makes his presence in the climax. Vaibhav (Saradhi) is okay as Good Samaritan cop but it is his characterization in the film that disconnects one. Anaamika in the film often calls Saradhi, cop, by his name without much respect as if she knows him very well. Irony is the cop who works 24/7 for solving one 'missing' case calls her Anaamika garu!!

Technical aspects:

Sekhar Kammula, who is struggling to return to glory, has chosen a remake. Unlike the original film Kahaani, Anaamika is neither taut nor delicious thriller. Blame the writer-director Sekhar Kammula for failing to adapt well. Lazy scripting is conspicuous. Inexplicable points in story, inert and boilerplate direction, sluggish narration mar the film. Sekhar, who is revered and regarded as intellectual filmmaker, too take too many cinematic liberties in narrating a thriller. Yet he throws many social challenges that a common woman is going through in society. All these aspects make Anaamika a Saada Film (any regular film).

Keeravani's background music is intense, gripping. Vijay C. Kumar's cinematography needs special mention. Editing is good. Marthand K. Venkatesh, who failed to act in the first half, realized it by the time film reached to the second part and counterbalances it.

Thumbs Up:

1. Nayantara
2. Story
3. Background score
4. Interval bang
5. Pre-climax
6. Second half

Thumbs Down:

1. Umpteen loop holes
2. Defies logic
3. First half
4. Inexplicable points
5. Climax
6. Inert, boilerplate direction

Analysis:

The film begins with a terror blast in Lumbini Park and swiftly switches into the life of Anaamika (Nayantara) and her 'missing' hubby Ajay Sastri (Harshvardhan). The film runs at snail pace in the first part and bores you at times. Interval bang raises curiosity and stay you connected. It is one's trust on Sekhar Kammula that holds you to watch the second half. Living up to expectations, Sekhar manages to compensate the loss he has done in first half with the second half. Yet there are many inexplicable points (like why didn't terrorists or Home Minister try for the hard disk right from the beginning, Home Minister Naresh's relation with blasts, How could he close the every crucial, sensational case, including C.I's murder, without solving? Why Saradhi has so much soft-corner on Anaamika, How come dreadful terrorists fail to differentiate between right hard disk and a dummy one, How come international and notorious terrorist chief  simply gets killed) loop holes in the script that baffle you with many unanswered questions. And this list goes on and on and on. This is what keep you off the track.

Nayantara tries hard to save the film and yes, she is partly successful. Pre-climax portions are good. Despite missing some logic, the film is a one-time watch. The film might connect to people who haven't watched original Kahaani.

Verdict: Seedha Saadha Kahaani (Normal Story)

Prathinidhi Movie Review

Movie: Prathinidhi
Rating:3.25/5
Cast: Nara Rohit , Sri Vishnu , Kota Sreenivasa Rao , Shubra Aiyyappa

Prathinidhi Movie Review

Prathinidhi review: Thought-provoking Prathinidhi

With elections just around the corner, films with political backdrop hitting the screens. After handful of films like Prabhanjanam, Pratightana, here comes Nara Rohit's Prathinidhi. Unlike others, this film has got hype ever since the makers unveiled its first teaser. Rohit has been going through lean phase of late. Unfazed by it, Rohit teams up with newcomer Prashanth Mandava for a political drama. Will he overcome the jinx with this? Check out our verdict.

Plot: Manchodu Sreenu (Nara Rohit) is a responsible citizen who strictly goes by rule book. He doesn't even let anyone to throw the waste on roads. One day he abducts the Chief Minister of State. And yes, it has a purpose. What was it? What compelled Sreenu to kidnap the CM? What are all his demands? Did he manage to come out of it at the end? All these form the crux of the story.

Performances:

Nara Rohit: Nara Rohit as Manchodu Sreenu hogs the limelight. He carries off the film on his shoulders. It's his show all the way. His subtle performance work in favour of the film. Yet Rohit couldn't overcome his negatives while playing romantic interest. Rohit needs to focus on this and rest all is fine.

Kota Sreenivasa Rao: Kota Sreenivasa Rao might have donned the cap of politician umpteen times and yes, he did act like CM in many films for the past. Yet, Kota's role in Prathinidhi is quite different from his previous ones. Unlike his erstwhile films, Kota has more or less equal screen presence with Nara Rohit in the film. Kota fits the bill aptly.

Shubhra Aiyyappa: Newcomer Shubhra Aiyyappa is not so easy on eyes. She looks old. Shubhra needs to improve her acting prowess. Else, going gets tough for her given that there is high competition.

Technical aspects: On technical front, Prathinidhi scores well. Chitti Babu cranks his camera well. Background score comes in handy for gripping narrative. Editing is good. However, editor should have used his scissors well for the first part of the film which appears draggy at times.

Thumbs Up:
1. Nara Rohit
2. Story
3. Gripping Screenplay
4. Dialogues
5. Climax

Thumbs Down:
1. Romantic track of Rohit-Shubhra Aiyyappa
2. Sluggish narration in first half

Analysis: The film opens with interesting title cards quoting best quotes of popular, influential leaders. Right from then, the movie goes on pace till the end. It is a bold, fresh take on prevailing political system. The well-conceived, thought-provoking film is an eye-opener to many wicked politicians and traditional political parties. Despite handful of mistakes, draggy narration at times, debutante director succeeds in keeping the thrill alive till the end. It's the second half, told convincingly, that saves the film.

Especially, Manchodu Sreenu's demands for releasing CM and his reasons for abducting him is what strikes a chord. Dialogues are big asset. Nara Rohit's subtle performance works in favour of the film. Actors Kota Sreenivasa Rao, Posani Krishna Murali as usual did fine job. Hitting the screens in political season, Prathinidhi makes for a good watch.

Verdict: Manchi Prathinidhi (Good representative)

Rowdy Movie Review

Rowdy Rating:3.5/5
Cast: Mohan Babu , Jayasudha , Manchu Vishnu , Shanvi
Directed by : Ram Gopal Varma
Produced by : Vijay, Gajendra & Pa
Banner :24 Frames Factory Ltd., AV Pictures
Music by : Sai Karthik
Release Date : 2014-04-04

Rowdy Movie Review

Rowdy is Desi Godfather

Unfazed by last year's debacle Satya 2, eccentric filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma came up with Rowdy this time around. For a change, Varma teamed up with Veteran actor Mohan Babu and his scion Manchu Vishnu for an action-drama. The combo itself raised many eyebrows among movie buffs at first. Soon, the film garnered good buzz after the makers unveiled its first look and music. Curious to know our verdict? Read on...

Plot: To put it simply, Rowdy is a classic tale of a faction family set in Rayalaseema backdrop. Anna (Mohan Babu), the family's chieftain, is a powerful and popular public figure in the region who defies law for what he believe in. The film revolves around Nandavaram project to which Anna is opposed for the well-being of local people. Whereas a group of antagonists who have vested interests in the project are desperate to kill Anna to get their project done. What forms rest is feud between two parties.

Performances:

Mohan Babu: Mohan Babu as Anna carried off the film on his shoulders. His persona, mannerisms catch your eye. One could watch Mohan Babu's finest performance in Rowdy and it recalls you the performance of World's greatest actor Marlon Brando (Vito Corleone) of The God Father. It is not exaggerated to say his acting is on par with national-award winning performance. Ram Gopal Varma brilliantly extracted acting prowess of Mohan Babu.

Manchu Vishnu: Vishnu (Krishna) is a In the latter half of the film, one could see Krishna taking over reigns from his father Anna that immediately takes you back to crowning of prince Michael Corleone as successor to Vito Corleone. Varma again showcased Vishnu Manchu in a powerful, never-before-seen role. Vishnu's performance in Rowdy is a befitting answer to his critics. No doubt, Vishnu excelled as an actor and gone to next-level with Rowdy.

Jayasudha: Jayasudha, who earned the sobriquet of Sahaja Nati, again lived up to her tag. Her role as Lakshmi, wife of Anna, is flawless. Sentiment and romantic scenes between Lakshmi and Anna work in favour of the film.

Shanvi: Shanvi plays Sirisha, romantic interest of Krishna (Vishnu). She does have substantial role in the film. Shanvi is appealing, easy on eyes. Yes, she looks sexy in Nee Meeda Othu romantic song with Vishnu. Looks like, Shanvi has struck Gold with Rowdy.

Technical Aspects:

Music: Sai Karthik has rightly used RGV's opportunity. Music is soothing and comes in handy for film. Especially, the background score needs special mention. BG work perfectly blends with scenes and it elevates the film at many places.

Cinematography: Satish Muthyala's Cinematography is passable.

Editing: Editing is okay and could have been better. The film is slick and sharp due to tight editing work.

Thumbs Up:

1. Terrific performances of lead cast
2. Strong storyline
3. Direction
4. Slick narration

Thumbs Down:

1. Tanikella Bharani's dialogues
2. Cinematography at portions

Analysis: Ram Gopal Varma's Rowdy is perfect adaptation of Mario Puzo's greatest classic The Godfather. Varma, who is going through lean phase of late, don't want to take any chances with Rowdy. He strictly goes by The Godfather. Yet he told in interesting, convincing way. Terrific performances of stellar cast (Mohan Babu, Vishnu and Jayasudha) and the perfect brooding atmosphere make Rowdy an outstanding work of RGV in recent times. RGV's gripping narration takes the film to top level.

The idea to showcase Mohan Babu sans makeup, wig appears real and natural. Perhaps, this is what compels audience to instantly connect with the role Anna. There are no forced songs, dialogues unlike typical Telugu films. Music composer Sai Karthik is a dark horse and surprising element in the film. He has done his best job.

Had the makers taken enough care on technical front, Rowdy would have been classic. Cinematography at times put you off. Film is slick and sharp. Editing is okay but could have been better. Dialogues are fine. Few extra dialogues of Tanikella Bharani (Vedam) may not go well. On whole, Rowdy is far better than recent RGV's films. Rowdy is a breathe of fresh air to Tollywood which is stuck with stereotypical potboilers.

Verdict: Devil (RGV) is Back!

Bangaru Kodipetta Movie Review

Cast: Navdeep , Swathi , Harsha Vardhan and others
Directed by : Raj Pippalla
Produced by : Sunitha Tati
Banner :Guru Films
Music by : Mahesh Shankar
Release Date : 2014-03-07
Bangaru Kodipetta Movie Review:
Navdeep who has been desperately searching for a hit has teamed up with Swathi this time. Raj Pippalla directed this film which grabbed the attention of film lovers with attractive promos.

What is it about?

This film is about three stories.

1) Vamsi (Navdeep) and Bhanu (Swathi) plans to rob few kilos of gold to settle down in life.
2) An aspiring actor Venu (Santosh) realizes one can be hero in real life.
3) Two brothers (Ram Lakshman) unite after being separated due to property related clashes.

Performances:

Swathi is impressive as usual. She looked dull and pale to suit the character. She is very expressive and delivered the best for the character. Navdeep's performance is fine. He is very handsome in this film. Harsha Vardhan excelled every time he is on screen. Santosh failed to do justice to his role. There is nothing much to say about other actors.

Technicalities:

Raj Pippalla failed to extract the best out of his technical crew. Everyone has come up with average or below average output. Cinematography is just okay and music is mediocre. None of the songs are impressive. Background score is a total letdown. Editing could have been much much better. Editor could have chopped chunks of waste from this film. Director's efforts as a writer are good, but he has failed miserably in the execution part. Films like these need a racy screenplay and Raj Pippalla failed to make this an engaging film despite interesting plot.

Analysis:

Bangaru Kodipetta starts off on an interesting note and looks promising at the start. But it fizzled out at a rapid pace with director taking the slow route. The film's screenplay never shifts gears and gets boring as it reaches the interval point. We expect things to get better and fast in the second half, but the director had other ideas.

He continued to take it forward at his own leisure pace and Bangaru Kodipetta gets tiresome at a point. The film only gathers speed towards the climax and ends on a fine note. Except for the climax sequences, nothing works in favor of this film. The premise is good and could have been a fine crime caper if the director took care of the entertainment factor and made the film engaging.

We have seen better films with the same plot and hence Bangaru Kodipetta fails to impress on a whole. Only thing noteworthy is the screenplay format used to narrate this film that has three stories intervened into one. Director failed to write impressive scenes on other characters except for the lead pair. Swathi and Navdeep shouldered this ordinary film and made it watchable. Director's weaknesses hampered the prospects of this Hen and hence it ended up as a below average fare.

Verdict: 'Bronze' Kodipetta!!

Bheemavaram Bullodu Movie Review

Rating:2.25/5
Cast: Sunil , Esther , Sayaji Shinde , Supreeth and others
Directed by : Udaya Sankar
Produced by : Suresh
Banner :Suresh Productions
Music by : Anup Rubens
Release Date : 2014-02-27

Bheemavaram Bullodu Movie Review

Sunil is back as Bhimavaram Bullodu after his failed attempt to make an impression as solo hero in Mr. Pellikoduku. Udaya Sankar of Kalisundam Ra fame directed this film and Suresh produced it.

What is it about?

Rambabu (Sunil) is a timid guy who stays away from troubles. One day he comes to know that he has brain tumor and will die in ten days. So he decides to some good for society in those ten days and messes with rowdies of Hyderabad. Doctor reveals that Rambabu has no brain tumor and now he has to run for his life. Also he has a task to impress his lover's (Esther) dad (Sayaji Shinde).

Performances:

Sunil is in his elements as Rambabu. He tried hard to justice to his role and not to seem like a regular commercial hero. However those who expect trademark Sunil comedy will be disappointed with this character. Esther is alright. Posani Krishna Murali's comedy didn't impress. Prithviraj's act as blind man is good. Supreeth is okay and Sayaji Shinde is standard. There are so many actors in this film and everyone did their bit.

Technicalities:
Udaya Sankar's last film Raraju was a dud and he has waited for years to get another opportunity. Despite sitting idle for many years, he couldn't write a good story. The story of this film is given by Kalidas and it is too cliched and ordinary. Even the screenplay and treatment are so bad that Bhimavaram Bullodu fails on many levels.

Cinematography is standard and editing could have been much much better. There is so much lag in the second half which could have been edited out. Dialogues by Sridhar are silly and Music by Anup Rubens is mediocre. The film is made on a very low budget.

Analysis:

Audience expects a good comedy with Sunil playing the lead role. Bhimavaram Bullodu tried to entertain, but the cliched treatment and stale comedy didn't help the cause. First half of the movie is a total waste with Sunil playing an action hero with so many fight scenes. Everything can be predicted from scene one and there is not much fun to sit through this horrendous comedy.

There is comedy in bits and pieces in the second hour, but that will not please the ticket paying public. Sunil's efforts to impress Sayaji Shinde, his attempts to slip away from the goons should have been hilarious to make an impact. Sadly, Bhimavaram Bullodu doesn't deliver the required punch at the right time. At one point the film turns out to be unbearably predictable and boring that you will have to wait impatiently for the end titles to roll in.

Bhimavaram Bullodu is an unimpressive comedy that will not appeal to any section of audience. It is hard to sit through this film unless you are provided with the facility of fast forwarding the boring parts. You will be terribly disappointed if you are expecting genuine comedic moments from ace comedian Sunil. Better to watch his comedy bits on Gemini comedy or Youtube channel rather going for Bhimavaram Bullodu.

Verdict: Hopeless Bullodu
