Why Late recognition for Kamal Haasan?

It's common fact by now that versatile actor-director-producer-screen writer-singer-lyric writer Kamal Haasan has been conferred with Padma Bhushan for the year 2014. Although, it's time for Kamal Haasan's fans to cheer and celebrate this landmark moment, most of them are grumbling over the late recognition their favourite star got. And to an extent, there is a valid point for them to get disappointed.

Kamal Haasan made his acting debut as a child artiste at the age of four years. Yes, it's splashy debut as he walked away with President's Gold Medal for his very first performance on screen in Kalathur Kannamma. That's just beginning and he never looked back since then. He played diverse yet versatile roles. He didn't confine himself to acting and he proved his mettle in screen-writing, direction, production and what not? He excelled in film-making in every respect. He did get Padma Shri in 1990.

It's not exaggerated to say that Kamal is one of the best actors from India. In fact, his peer Rajinikanth has admitted this fact a lot of times. It's not just Rajinikanth alone who praised Kamal. Steven Spielberg were all praises for Kamal during his last visit to India. Academy award winning director Ang Lee went a step ahead and said he was stunned by Kamal Haasan's brilliance. Many film experts refer Kamal as Walking Encyclopedia.

Yet, one thing has upset film lovers and Kamal's fans. The probable reason for Kamal's fans to get disappointed: Rajinikanth got the same award in 2000, 14 years before Kamal bestowed with Padma Bhushan. In between, Kamal's another peer Chiranjeevi too awarded Padma Bhushan in 2006 when strong rumours surfaced that he would join politics. And he did in 2008 by floating Praja Rajyam Party and merged it with Congress.

Naturally, the common question arises is why did it take 14-long-years for Union Government to recognise prowess of Kamal Haasan? Kamal Haasan has got four National Awards, two Filmfare Awards and record 17 Filmfare Awards in south (no other actor surpassed this record in South India. Chiranjeevi is 10-time winner of Filmfare Awards South). There is an adage: Justice delayed is Justice denied. And perhaps, the same applies to Awards as well. That's saddened Kamal's fans. Whatever, the 59-year-old acting legend take all these awards in same stride. That's Kamal Haasan for you folks!
