Modi: Chaiwala to 15th PM of India

Narendra Damodardas Modi, PM-designate and four-term Gujarat CM, is all set to become 15th Prime Minister of India. 63-year-old Modi, who scored a mind-boggling victory and played key role in emerging his party (BJP) as the first single-party to get majority on its own in the Lok Sabha in 30 years, is going to take oath as Prime Minister at 6 pm today (May 26, 2014) in the forecourt of the majestic Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi. Modi is likely to clad in his trademark short-sleeve kurta, jacket and expected to come in his favourite Scorpio. Before this, Modi will visit Rajghat today morning to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

A chaiwala to Kara Sevak to Gujarat CM to PM of India, Modi's journey has been amazing and quite inspiring. Born on 17 September 1950 to a family of grocers belonging to the backward Ghanchi-Teli (oil-presser) community, in Vadnagar in Mehsana district of what was then Bombay State (present-day Gujarat), Modi was the third of four children born to Damodardas Mulchand Modi and his wife, Heeraben. He helped his father sell tea at Vadnagar railway station. As a child and as a teenager, he ran a tea stall with his brother near a bus terminus. Modi later gave up his family life to serve the country and joined as full-time Sevak in RSS. He later joined BJP and since then he never looked back. Modi was a key strategist for the BJP in the successful 1995 and 1998 Gujarat state election campaigns. He became Chief Minister of Gujarat in October 2001 and served longer by far in that position than anyone else to date. Modi has no assets of his own and he had a bank balance of Rs 21 Lakh that too he has given it to his car driver for his daughters' future.

Modi's swearing-in ceremony will have a number of foreign dignitaries in attendance including SAARC leaders. It would be attended by nearly 4,000 guests, including leaders like Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa. This is the first swearing-in to see representatives from foreign embassies and high commissions based in Delhi.President Pranab Mukherjee will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Narendra Modi and his Council of Ministers in the presence of a host of leaders, including outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and party Vice President Rahul Gandhi, besides leaders of various other parties and Chief Ministers of a number of states including AP CM-deignate Chandra Babu Naidu and Telangana CM-designate K. Chandrasekhar Rao. Above all, Mr Modi's 92-year-old mother Heeraben is also expected to attend the ceremony. With Modi set to be PM, all eyes of world are today on the biggest democratic nation.
